When teachers are interactive with a class, it makes for a more exciting learning environment and makes the student want to do their best. It is hard, especially for younger students to pay attention when all a teacher does is lecture for an hour. It is much easier for a student to go to class when their teacher is involved. Rita’s stories of teaching in the classroom demonstrate to the audience that she has been in the same situation they are in which then allows them to relate to her.īeing a student, I believe that Rita makes valuable arguments in her video. Because she has been in the field of education for many years and, has been successful her audiences is able to consider her as a reliable person. Due to the fact, that Rita, her parents, and her maternal grandparents have all been educators, she establishes ethos during her video. She states that ,“every kid needs a champion”, this quote motivates her audience to be the champion for their kids, and persuades them to build connections with their students. Through out her video Rita Pierson employs pathos, a emotional appeal in order to persuade her audience. Her goal is for teachers to take her advice back to the classroom so they can then motivate students to learn, come to class, and eventually graduate. She addresses educators like herself, so that she can help them to be the best teachers they possibly can. Rita Pierson’s purpose in the video is to educate teachers on the importance of building strong connections with their students in order to motivate them to continue to learn. The hardest part about being a teacher is having to deal with the children who are rude, and disrespectful, however, these are usually the students who need the most guidance Although, Rita states how it important it is to build these relationships, she also understands that children are not the easiest to deal with. Teachers like this make students feel better about their bad grades and encourage them to do better, by simply motivating a student their grades can significantly improve. This leaves the child confused, however, Pierson explains that he at least got two right, he is “on a roll” and will do much better next time. Rita shares a story about an instance where a child in her class has answered two out of fifteen questions correct on a quiz, instead on writing on the paper minus fifteen she writes plus two. Teachers who become more involved in a child’s life, and show that they care, results in students caring more about their class work and doing better. This reiterates her point that teachers, as well as students must be involved in forming relationships in order to fully understand a topic. She shares a quote by James Comer that states, “ No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship”. Through out her video, Rita Pierson continues to emphasize the importance of building relationships with students, in order for them to get the most out of learning. It is simply not enough for teachers to stand in front of a classroom for and hour and lecture, they must make the topic interesting so that students want to learn. However, being a student myself learning from a teacher that you do not like makes class unbearable and makes it hard to attend. She mentions in her video that her one of her co-worker had said, “ They don’t pay me to like the kids. This lack of relationship is resulting in students to be disinterest in class and dropping out. Most times, especially in college classrooms, all students know about their professor is their name and what they teach. She then introduces the main problem many students are failing and dropping out of school due to the fact that there is no relationship built between the educator and the learner. To begin her video, Rita Pierson informs her audience of her and her families past experience of being educators. Rita Pierson in her Ted talks video explains to educators, like her self that “every child needs a hero” and in order for children to learn relationship must be formed. It is a necessity for teachers and students to build relationships in order to get the most out of their learning. However, this is causing an increase of students skipping class, failing assignments and dropping out of school. Instead of building relationships with students, teachers are more focused on teaching a lesson and cramming in as many facts as possible. Have you ever had that one teacher, who left a lasting impact on you? Today more and more kids will answer no to this question, this is because in todays education teachers are becoming detached from students.
